• Protesting in Graffiti: A dispatch from Oakland, California

In lieu of this week’s news that Berkeley Police Department has been added to the growing list of police with body and squad car cameras, we remember #Black Lives Matter protests that took place in Oakland in December 2014.

The group of young adults in these photos decided to take a different approach and protest through graffiti art. The group marched through the streets of East Oakland  to Downtown Oakland spray painting their messages along the way. In Downtown Oakland this same group stopped traffic while they stenciled on the blacktop of each street corner. The photographs captured here were submitted to us by one of our contributors.

The group chose to identify themselves simply as supporters protesting police & institutional violence.
